Marcus Fabius Quintilianus (ca. 35-ca. 100) was a Roman rhetorician from Hispania, widely referred to in medieval schools of rhetoric and in Renaissance writing. His work influenced many classical thinkers including but not limited to: Martial, Pliny and Juvenal. His influence spread through the Middle Ages to such thinkers as Saint Augistine. The Italian Renaissance Poet, Petrarch, (1304-1374) addressed one of his letters to the dead in his “Letter to Posterity,” to Quintilian. With the spread of humanism during the Renaissance, many believed that Quntilian’s work provided the inspiration for a new humanistic philosophy of education. (17985) $45
