The author, Terence (ca.190-159 B.C.E.), was a North African slave who was freed by his Roman master, became a renowned Roman playwright in his own time for his elegant and colloquial style of Latin. His Latin was studied in the Middle Ages and Renaissance times. His influence was felt for centuries, his work having been imitated in the comedies of a number of playwrights in the Renaissance.
