Tennyson, Alfred Lord . The Suppressed Poems of Alfred Lord Tennyson, 1830-1868. London: J. Thompson, 1905. Small octavo. (4) 65-172, 149-172pp. (130 pages total). Red cloth boards with black lettering over white label on the spine. Uncut pages. The work was the among the first successful attempts to collect Tennyson’s work that was either suppressed by others or altered by the author himself during his lifetime. The publication was eventually made possible due to the lapse in the copyright for Tennyson’s work that occurred in 1900. The work includes “Timbuctoo” which was won Tennyson the Chancellor’s Medal while he was at Trinity College, Cambridge, as well as the original version of “The Lover’s Tale”, and other work not originally deemed worthy of publication. The pagination is curious, and is slightly confusing, not made any easier by the fact that there is no table of contents. Starting with page 65, the pages go until 172, and then continue with additional completely different pagination labeled 149-172. Binding with minor rubbing to corners. Spine lightly smudged and sunned. Interior with some smudging and age toning to the edges of some pages. Binding in overall very good-, interior in very good condition overall. A tight copy. vg- to vg. Hardcover. (42141) $65
