The cannons were discovered during a heavy winter storm by Nolan Harter. The storm had removed nine feet of sand and exposed the five cannons. Due to the quick reaction of Harter who summoned help to remove the cannons before the tide came in and filled he area with sand again. The Goleta Slough was one of the largest Indian settlements in California, estimated at upwards of two thousand Indian living in the area. Published records indicate early Yankee traders as the highest probability for the origins of these cannons. Possibilities that Drake, Cavendish or De Lint may have touched on the Goleta area are explored in the book.
