Rohde, Erwin. Psyche. Seelencult und Unsterblichkeitsglaube der Griechen (Psyche. Cult of the Soul and Immortality Belief of the Greek) 2. Vols. Tübingen, Leipzig: J. C. B. Mohr, 1903. Third edition. Quarto. xv, 329, iii, 448pp. Original three quarter green cloth over marbled boards with black lettering and publisher’s device on cream labels on cover and spine. Publisher’s device on title page. Slightly edited edition of the second, revised edition. Rohde, one of the great German classical scholars, is known for his friendship and correspondence with Friedrich Nietzsche. His work Psyche is still considered a standard reference for Greek cult practices and beliefs.

“This book is, through presenting the opinions of the Greek about life of the soul after death, a contribution to the history of Greek religion… Greek religion, as a grown, not a founded religion, never gave thoughts and feelings, by which religion is determined from within and created outwardly, a conceptual expression. It represents itself by religious action only; there are no religious books to explain the deepest meaning and context of thoughts necessary to connect to the godly powers.” (Foreword of first edition). Text in German. Bindings with light wear along edges, spines somewhat sunned and rubbed. Library sticker on spines, library stamps on top and bottom edges, library bookplates on inside covers, library pockets on inside back covers. Previous owner’s name inked to front free endpapers. Bindings in overall good+, interiors in very good condition. g+ to vg. Hardcover. (45775) $95
