The Bauhaus, founded originally in Weimar, moving to Dessau and, for a short while, to Berlin-Steglitz, was one of the most significant phenomenons in the art of the 20th century. It seminal influence in art and craft is still felt today. When founded by the architect Walter Gropius in 1919 as a architecture school, its goal was to become a school for all arts from the beginning. Painters dominated the first years of the Bauhaus while pure architecture came to the fore only later. Beautifully illustrated book with reproductions of photographs in color and b/w throughout.
