Hedges was one of the leaders of the 1870 Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition sent to explore upper Yellowstone. Hedges was known in Montana as the “Father of Education.” A residence hall at Montana State University is named after him, as are several elementary schools in Montana. Hedges was also the first master of Masonic Lodge No. 3 in Helena in 1865 and 1866. He was a Bridger Trail pioneer, served two terms as a Montana State Senator, was a member of the State Legislative Assembly, Superintendent of Public Instruction for several years, and campaigned for a Repulican seat in Congress in 1874. Regarding Yellowstone, Hedges said, “there ought to be no private ownership of any portion of that region, but the whole ought to be set apart as a great National Park….” Book is a biography and autobiography, bound together, of the German poet Jean Paul Frederic Richter. Translated from the German by Eliza Buckminster Lee.The book has some foxing, but it doesn’t obscure the text. Corners are slightly bumped and the spine is sunned, with some shelf wear.
