Halevy, Zvi; George Z. F. Bereday (Foreword by). Jewish Schools under Czarism and Communism: A Struggle for Cultural Identity [Inscribed and Signed]. New York: Springer Publishing Company, 1976. First edition. Octavo. VI, 298pp. Original blue cloth with black lettering on spine and front cover. Free front endpaper inscribed and signed in Hebrew by Zvi Halevy. This remarkable work is designed to capture a glimpse of Yiddish education during its final stages under Czarist and Soviet Russian rule. The tragic pogroms of Czarist antisemitism frequently resulted in destruction of Yisddish schools and deaths of leading educators. The Bolshevik Revolution first promised respite with the principle of free development for national minorities, but this principle did not extend to religious culture. Thus the traditional Yiddish schools, oriented toward the Jewish religion, were doomed to total destruction. Binding rubbed along edges and discolored on spine. Upper front corner of the first 8 leafs partly creased. Binding in overall fair, interior in good+ condition. g. Hardcover. (33606) $35
