“Die Judenstadt von Lublin” (The Jewish Town of Lublin) was written by Majer Samuel Bałaban (1877-1942), one of the most outstanding historians of Polish and Galician Jews, and the founder of Polish Jewish historiography.

Illustrated with numerous b/w illustrations by Karl Richard Henker, this work tells the story of the Jews of Lublin (Poland) who occupied an entire Jewish town* beside the Christian town, and where they were granted the right ‘de non tolerandis Christianis’ (the right to exclude Christians from the settlement), in analogy to the corresponding right ‘de non tolerandis Judaies’ in the Christian part of Lublin.

*In 1939, there were approximately 42,000 Jews living in Lublin, of which only 200-300 survived the holocaust either by hiding or surviving various camps. (41767) $65
