Reprinted for the series of Dropsie College Editions on Jewish Apocryphal Literature, this work reproduces the content of the famous text known commonly as “Letter of Aristeas”, a Hellenistic work of the 2nd century BC. This text purportedly describes the historical account of the creation of the Greek Old Testament, (or Septuagint), the first version of the complete Hebrew bible, translated into Greek. According to the text, this took place by way of a group of 72 translators from Jerusalem sent to the Library of Alexandria. The book presents the original text in Greek, with its corresponding translation into English on the opposite page. Text throughout contains running footnotes, comprised of bibliographic and other scholarly notes. Index at rear. Binding with some very minor rubbing to the head and tail of the spine.
